Why was cinema attendance so low in the 1980s?

There was growth in TV ownership, people were buying more TVs and watching films and television programmes on them for free.

Car ownerships were growing and so people could choose less traditional entertainment that was further away.

After 1970s the growth of VHS and video rental was a "killer" for cinema industry, because people prefered to stay at home and rent a film and save money.

Why have cinema ticket sales grown since 1984?

The ownership of computers grew, but perhaps people appreciated the opportunity to get out of the house and watch a film without being distracted.

Compared to other evening entertainments, for example going pubs or clubbing, cinema is considered more cheap and relaxing.

Numbers of multiplex cinemas increased, they are easily accessible by car and offer a wide range of new films out.

There is new technology that offers new dimensions to film like 3D and Imax and it takes the experience of cinema to a whole new level.

Cinema has benefited from the growth of movie market thanks to DVD sales and online films.
